Does ChatGPT recommend your business? How to measure visibility in AI search
A practical way to see whether your business appears when prospective customers ask AI systems for services like yours, which sources shape those answers, and what to improve next.
Short answer: measure a set of questions, not a screenshot
The most useful way to check whether ChatGPT recommends your business is to build a small, repeatable benchmark. Choose 20–30 questions that represent real discovery, comparison and hiring situations; run them across the AI surfaces that matter to your market; and record what you observe.
A Punta del Este real estate firm might test buying, investment, foreign-buyer, budget and location questions. A professional practice might use a specific service, client profile or problem. Do not put your brand into every prompt: the most valuable demand often comes from people who do not know your name yet.
For each observation, record the exact question, engine, date, brands mentioned, cited sources or URLs, and notes on how the business was represented.
- 01
Define 20–30 commercial questions.
- 02
Run the same set across relevant AI surfaces.
- 03
Record brands, citations, URLs and context.
- 04
Keep the baseline and repeat it in 60–90 days.
A screenshot can prove one appearance. A benchmark can show change.
A mention, citation and recommendation are different signals
A business can be named in a list, surfaced as a relevant option, recommended for a particular need, used as a cited source, or receive a click. Those events have different commercial meaning and should be tracked separately.
OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if you want to help content be discovered, surfaced, clearly cited and linked. OpenAI also states that a particular position is not guaranteed.
That is why we avoid selling a supposed “#1 ranking in ChatGPT.” A responsible observation describes what happened for a defined set of questions at a defined time.
- Mention: the brand appears in the answer.
- Recommendation: the brand is presented as an option for the stated need.
- Citation: a page on the domain is used as a visible source.
- Indirect source: the company is represented through a third party.
- Traffic: the user clicks through to the website.

Use metrics you can explain
You do not need an opaque proprietary score to create a useful baseline. Start with indicators that a client or internal team can reconstruct from the underlying observations.
Presence rate shows how often the brand appears within the test set. Citation rate shows how often pages from the domain are used as sources. Competitive presence shows which brands recur and in which question types. Representation accuracy checks whether services, location and specialization are described correctly.
These are benchmark metrics we define for measurement; they are not official ChatGPT metrics. Always report sample size, date and engines alongside them.
- Presence rate across the query set.
- Domain citation rate.
- Recurring competitor brands.
- Most-used sources and domains.
- Representation accuracy.
- Observable referral traffic and business inquiries.

Measure real buying questions, not isolated keywords
AI assistants let people express far more context than a traditional keyword. One question can include industry, location, budget, urgency and the problem itself. Your benchmark should reflect that behavior.
Mix discovery, problem, comparison, local and hiring questions. Otherwise you risk measuring only branded searches or educational prompts with little commercial intent.
Local context matters too. ChatGPT can use approximate location to improve local results, so record the conditions of the test rather than treating one answer as universal.
- Discovery: “Which companies provide AI automation in Uruguay?”
- Problem: “We lose WhatsApp leads because replies are slow. What can we do?”
- Comparison: “How can we automate without losing human control?”
- Local: “Who provides SEO for businesses in Punta del Este?”
- Hiring: “I need a company to implement WhatsApp with AI in Uruguay.”
When a competitor appears, investigate the source before copying the page
If another company appears repeatedly, do not start by copying its titles or creating a look-alike article. First understand the evidence surrounding that brand.
Sometimes the source is the company's own website. Other times it is a publication, association, directory, review, dataset or third-party guide. That distinction changes the action: you may need to improve a first-party page, earn legitimate third-party presence, or create evidence that does not exist yet.
If no local company has clear coverage for an important question, that gap can itself be an editorial opportunity: build the strongest guide, case study, dataset or benchmark on the problem.
AI visibility is shaped not only by your website, but by the information ecosystem that represents your business.
ChatGPT, Google and Bing expose different signals
For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot to support discovery and citations. ChatGPT referral links include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help identify part of that traffic in analytics. GPTBot is a separate control associated with potential training, so the two crawlers should not be treated as the same thing.
For Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode build on core Search ranking and quality systems. Google says there is no special AI schema or required AI text file: crawling, indexing, internal links, useful content, accessible text and structured data that matches visible content remain the foundation. Google now documents a dedicated Generative AI performance report in Search Console for these experiences. The report measures performance; it is not a fixed AI ranking.
Bing provides a more explicit publisher view. AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations, cited pages, grounding-query samples and trends across experiences such as Copilot and Bing AI summaries. Microsoft notes that citation counts do not represent ranking, authority or placement inside an answer.

SEO is still the foundation; evidence is the differentiator
Google explicitly says SEO best practices remain relevant to generative AI search because these experiences rely on its core Search ranking and quality systems. A crawlable architecture, focused service pages, internal links, current information and a good page experience still matter.
Technical correctness alone, however, does not create a reason to cite you. Original evidence—documented cases, proprietary data, transparent methods, verifiable comparisons and sector research—can provide something a generic article cannot.
For GEMOS, that means publishing fewer commodity posts about the “benefits of AI” and more assets that answer a specific question with evidence that can be checked.

Connect AI visibility to traffic and business outcomes
Visibility matters when it helps someone move forward. OpenAI documents utm_source=chatgpt.com on ChatGPT referral links, so some search-driven traffic can be identified in web analytics.
Not every discovery produces a direct click. Someone may first encounter a brand in an AI answer and later search it by name, open Maps, visit Instagram or type the domain directly. That is why a useful diagnosis combines detectable referrals with inquiries, forms, WhatsApp and branded-search signals when the data exists.
The operating rule is the same as in any automation: execution is not the same as an outcome. Decide what commercial signal you want to observe before claiming progress.

Measure again with the same methodology
A benchmark becomes valuable because it can be repeated. Preserve the query library, date, surfaces and recording method. If you replace every question in the second round, most of the comparison disappears.
Repeat the set after 60 or 90 days and look for changes in presence, sources, accuracy and traffic. Do not automatically attribute every difference to one intervention: models, indexes and competitors change too.
The useful question is not “Did we win ChatGPT?” It is “Did our representation improve in queries that matter to the business?”
Measure → improve → measure again. Do not turn answer variability into ranking promises.
What a GEMOS AI Visibility Check can include
For a business that wants a baseline without first building a monitoring platform, the initial scope can stay deliberately small. We define commercial questions, inspect relevant AI surfaces, record brands and sources, and finish with prioritized actions.
The check does not promise that ChatGPT will recommend your business or that a brand will reach a specific position. It shows how the business is represented now, where verifiable gaps exist and what is worth improving first.
The same benchmark can then be repeated to separate activity from observable progress.
- 20–30 commercial questions defined with the business.
- ChatGPT and other AI surfaces relevant to the market.
- Observed brands and competitors.
- Cited sources and URLs when available.
- Basic crawl, indexability and content review.
- Baseline with prioritized actions.
- Optional repeat measurement after 60–90 days.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Do not confuse advertising with organic inclusion in an AI-generated answer. This methodology measures observable mentions, citations and traffic; it does not promise to buy or guarantee a generated recommendation.
Is there SEO for ChatGPT?
Crawlability, architecture, content quality and authority can improve how accessible and verifiable your information is. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot for Search inclusion, but it does not guarantee a particular position.
Are OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot the same?
No. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for discovery and citations in ChatGPT Search, while GPTBot is managed separately for opting content out of potential training.
Do I need llms.txt to appear in ChatGPT or Google AI?
Google says special AI text files or markup are not required for its generative search features. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot and robots.txt for ChatGPT Search and does not list llms.txt as a requirement for inclusion.
How can I see traffic from ChatGPT?
OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. You can inspect that traffic in analytics, while remembering that not every AI-assisted discovery ends in a direct click.
Does Google Search Console show a separate AI ranking?
Google now documents a dedicated Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It helps measure performance in those experiences, but it is not a fixed AI ranking.
